Let men tremble to win the hand of woman, unless they win along with it the utmost passion of her heart. NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE, The Scarlet Letter Our featured writer for issue 14 is Dr. Charles Adés Fishman, who says of his poems featured in this issue, "These seven poems touch on a current that has coursed through my work since I first began writing: the strength, beauty, pain, visions, sexuality, wisdom, and nurturing power of women." Fishman's poems are about a number of women in his life. Of them, he writes, "These amazing women helped shape the man, the poet, I have become, as have so many others: friends, teachers, lovers, my aunts; surrogate mothers who entered my life when I most needed them; my never-to-be-known grandmothers, and my spiritual sisters: extraordinary guides who have helped illuminate this deeply wounded world for me. I am still listening closely to all of them." His words speak for us all here at Artistry as we celebrate women in our special fall issue, Women: Light & Dark. Dr. Fishman suggested the theme when he accepted our invitation to be featured writer. We on the Artistry staff are honored to present his prose and poetry and so pleased that his theme evoked such passionate responses from all contributors to the current issue. We are proud to introduce the South African artist Liesl Jobson, whose photo graces our cover among other fine artists and writers. Thanks for stopping by! Cassandra Robison, Ph. D.
